My name is Tracey McGloin and I am the Home school support worker, here at Halling School. I have worked here for around 13 years now, I spent the first 4 as a TA in foundation stage and since then I have been in this role. Initially when I started the main purpose of the role was ‘to remove barriers to learning’. Whilst the role has evolved hugely since then, this purpose has essentially remained the same. I am passionate about what we do at Halling School and am very proud of the way we embrace our pupils and hold them throughout their journey with us.
Our aim is provide a space where every child has the opportunities to reach their fullest potential. In order to do this we must comply with many legal aspects i.e. curriculum, safeguarding, health & safety, data protection, the Children’s Act…..and on the long list goes. I believe that the foundation of all of this lies in a combined approach between school and parents to have a trusting relationship and everyone to feel valued. Whilst our ‘job’ is to educate the children, we feel that it is crucial to have a holistic approach, this means that we recognise every child as unique and consider the impact of the living in the world which sadly as we know is not always a smooth ride. Things that can impact a child’s day can vary from them having had a bad dream the previous night, to being subjected to a form of abuse. This is never a pleasant thing to think about, but sadly it does happen.
As parents we have the toughest job in the world and sometimes our emotional cup can become full up and start to overflow. This will, no matter how we attempt to hide it, impact on those around us. We recognise that all parents are doing their best and sometimes they just need a bit of understanding or even a bit of support. My main responsibilities currently are: safeguarding, attendance, child protection, looked after children and behaviour.
Because of the extensive knowledge I have of our school and the local community, I am also heavily involved in transition, into early years particularly and from year 6 to 7 also. I work closely with Mrs Woolmer (Head of Foundation Stage) around transition because it is the perfect opportunity to get to know our new families. As it is the beginning of a long and happy relationship, it is reassuring for parents to have that extra link between home and school.
Many parents never feel the need to access me, some parents and I have well established relationships and have felt I have enabled them in some way or another. I am no expert on any one thing; I do have two children and have survived this so far… just! I have an extensive understanding of child development and am currently in my 3rd year of counselling training. So I feel that I can offer a range of support to both parents and pupils in a professional and confidential manner. If our paths do cross, I look forward to meeting you.
